Monday Morning Encouragement - Whiter Than Snow

"Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
   Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."
Psalm 51:7

I must confess that I'm not much of a winter lover. Cold winds and snowfall make me long for warmer days, and I'd be content if my snow shovel never left its place in the shed. However, in light of what the Bible has to say about the whiteness of snow and how it relates to our salvation, I am able to look at snow from a different perspective.

In the Old Testament we learn that the Hebrews used hyssop in their sacred purification rites, and God instructed them to dip hyssop in the blood of a lamb, then wipe it on their doorposts as a sign to Him to pass over their homes during His righteous judgment against Egypt. This was a foreshadowing of the crucifixion.

The blood of Jesus Christ, the precious Lamb of God, washes away the sin of all who receive Him as Savior. Jesus' blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).  It covers our sins and God's judgment passes over us. Where once we were stained with sin, now we are washed in the blood and made whiter than snow.

I can't look at snow now without thinking of Christ's amazing love and sacrifice.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Today's music video is another Matt Redman song: Nothing But the Blood. It is a worship song filled with the truth of Jesus' sacrifice. I hope it speaks to you.

I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.

  1. Washing clean must be the theme of the week, Nancy. That's what church was about yesterday, baptism and water. I watched in on Facebook live...not a sentence I ever thought I'd hear myself say!! Stay warm!!

    Did you know when this is done it makes a cross?

    1. You are correct. The blood applied to the top and sides of the doorframe, which created a cross. Awesome!

  3. There is nothing more beautiful than the beautiful white layer of freshly fallen snow. It is so pure and white. But...I don't like the cold and wind that usually accompanies it. And since I fractured my back snowblowing a few years ago, I dislike it even more.
    It does remind me of the pure unstained lives we have through the blood of Jesus. My husband talked during church yesterday of something similar. How when we would go to the Oregon coast on vacations, our children would "mess up" the sandy beach by writing their names or building castles, etc. The beautiful beach was now almost ugly and stained with "sins." Then the tide would come in and wash it all away, leaving perfectly smooth sand once more. Just as Jesus's blood does in our lives.
    Thank you for the reminder today.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. A view of a field of unspoiled snow is beautiful. So is the image of sacrifice that Psalm 51 creates in words.

    1. Psalm 51 has special meaning for me. It was my prayer of surrender to Jesus in 1988 -- on a plane flying home to California from visiting my hospitalized mother in Illinois. xx

  7. Such a beautiful devotion, Nancy, and I always love the analogy of the blood of Jesus washing white as snow. It just is such a wonderful picture of grace to me! Now, I do love the winter with the snow and cold, but I understand it is tough to deal with too. We've had a wild winter here so far, it has been good to get all the moisture though. Blessings to you Nancy, and wishes for a wonderful New Year!
