My Heart Pillow and Women's Craft Day

Happy Monday Cottage Friends!

I hope you had a very nice weekend.

Today I want to share my latest project with you.

A heart pillow.

Once a month the women in our little church get together for a craft day.  We meet at 9:00 AM at the church with our project in hand.  Each woman works on whatever she wants.  Some of us bring our sewing machines and work on quilts or other sewing projects, some work on paper crafts, or needlework.  One young woman works on creative writing.  Anything and everything goes.  We stop at noon for lunch (each woman brings something to share), we have a short devotional, and then we get back to our crafts and wind things up around 2:00.  It's such a great way to bond with other women.  We encourage, joke around and just have a great time.

Last month I started a heart pillow, thinking I'd have it completed by Valentine's Day.  It was such a simple craft, I never imagined I'd still be working on it Saturday.  But, I had a really busy month and well, you know how it goes.

Here's the pillow back.

This was a fun and frugal project, using materials I already had on hand.

Fabric from my  big $2 bag of Habitat Restore material.  (I barely made a dent in my stash.)

The trim was crochet lace removed from a 25 cent placemat (washed first, of course), and pressed flat.

The buttons were the most expensive part of the pillow.  I found them at one of my favorite antique stores.  $4 is way more than I would normally pay for 5 buttons (yes, I know there are 6 staples, but one button was missing from the card), however I love the mother of pearl and the size of the buttons, so I splurged.

And I liked that sassy gal on the button card.  Plus, how can one resist buttons that are  "The Talk of the Town."

I figure I can repurpose that vintage card in a paper project one day.

Since I already had polyfil to stuff the pillow, I didn't spend any money there either.

So there you have it.  Fun, inexpensive, pretty and useful.  My kind of project.

What projects do you enjoy most?

As soon as I gdt through tax season and all the paper work I think I might just pull out my sewing machine and try to make a few pillows myself. I an do basic sewing and thats about it but its fun. 2. Nancy, I knew you would find a use for that card...she is too pretty to waste! Our church craft group meets on Fridays, I have always wanted to go, but I think it may have to wait until the kids are a bit older! Your pillow is lovely. I have pillow in waiting! The fabric is calling me, maybe this week!

  3. Pretty Valentine pillow. . . fun craft project and the best part is creating with friends. Visiting, sharing, being open with ones heart . . . makes for bonding and a warmth unmatched.

My most recent project is to finish some work on large poster like quotes and pictures for a baby shower. Hopefully they can be part of the new babes nursery.

    1. Sounds like a very rewarding project, Lynne. Baby gifts are always fun to give; especially the ones we make ourselves. Have fun!

  4. I really enjoy seeing what people do...you got me thinking I need to make a heart pillow! But I think I need to make one small...for a pin cushion.

    1. I've seen so many cute pin cushions made by crafters recently. I think a heart pin cushion would be adorable, Rose.

  5. I love the heart - the unusual fabric colors blend well together and vintage lace is always the best (newer ones are polyester and often stiff and so white!!!). The vintage button card is so pretty - and again, old buttons are better, made of natural materials not plastic!

I have plenty of bits of furniture waiting around for new spring coats - of paint! They are my current projects and will be tackled when it warms up and I can paint outside serenaded by the birds, and not needing warm gloves and snow boots, haha!

    Happy week - Mary

  6. My mom has a similar group at her church and I remember her telling me she was teaching some of them how to quilt and crochet. Very nice to share your talents with others and socialize at the same time. Love your pillow with your vintage scraps and the use of various textures makes a pretty keepsake.

  9. Isn't it great to have a group of women you can get together with and everyone kind of do their own thing or craft. Such a cute pillow. Also love your vintage button card.

  11. Nancy, your pillow is so sweet! And just the darling graphics on that button card made it well worth the $4 in my book. I love mother of pearl buttons and am adding some to a stitching I am doing to hang in my sewing room. Hubby and I are giving the room a new make over starting this weekend. It's always so fun to get together with ladies. Laughter is sure to be had! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
