"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11
Todays' Bible verse, taken from what we commonly refer to as "The Lord's Prayer," is well-known. It's so familiar to us that we may gloss over it without thinking about its implications. Here the Lord is instructing us to ask God for the provisions we need for this day. Not for today and tomorrow and the next day. But only for today.
God wants us to rely on Him daily. He is willing and eager to provide for not only our physical needs this day, but for our spiritual needs as well. As Jesus says in Matthew 11:25: "Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?"
He goes on to say in Matthew 11:31-33:
"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Today we need the food that God will provide. But our daily needs go far beyond meals. Today we need God's mercy. Today we need His grace.
"Day by day must you seek help from above. It is a very sweet assurance that a daily portion is provided for you. In the word, through the ministry, by meditation, in prayer, and waiting upon God you shall receive renewed strength. In Jesus all needful things are laid up for you. Then enjoy your continual allowance. Never go hungry while the daily bread of grace is on the table of mercy." ~ Charles Spurgeon
Today's music video Breathe by Michael W. Smith is a prayer to our gracious Heavenly Father. Listen to the lyrics and let them be your prayer today.
I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.
