Monday Morning Encouragement -- Free From Debt

"by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross." Colossians 2:14

Last spring I made my last car payment. When the title arrived in the mail, I felt relieved. My debt to the bank was paid in full; it was settled, and I was no longer under obligation to them. Now when I drive my automobile I have a sense of freedom that for years I didn't have. A canceled debt is something to celebrate.

The debt I owed to the bank pales in comparison to the great debt I owed to God for my sins. This is a debt every one of us owes, and unlike paying off a car or a home, we have no way of paying for our sins except through the blood of Jesus Christ. There aren't enough good things we can do. There aren't enough nice things we can say. We have no righteousness to offer God in and of ourselves. Only the perfect righteousness of Jesus will do.  When we receive Him as our Savior, a great transaction takes place. God marks our sin debt PAID IN FULL!  And from that day on we are free to celebrate our new life in Christ, and live as God always intended for us.

So, what does this mean to you? Are you living debt free in Jesus? I pray you are. It's good to pay off our material earthly debts, but the one debt that matters most is the spiritual debt we owe to God for our sins. That debt has eternal consequences, so let's make sure it's been settled in Christ before another minute passes.

Today's music video Jesus Paid It All by Fernando Ortega tenderly speaks to the love of our Savior.

I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.
