French Country Chair Makeover

This is a makeover I've been itching to complete, and now that it's finished I'm thrilled to share it with you.

When I changed out the chairs of my imperfectly perfect dining table and chairs, I was able to salvage one of the old chairs for use with my kitchen desk. I had a larger chair there that kind of overwhelmed the small desk, so I was happy to have a smaller chair to replace it.

The chair was sturdy, it just needed a paint job and an upholstery refresh.

I painted the chair with Rustoleum charcoal, lightly distressed it, and waxed it with Waverly dark antique wax. I also rubbed the same dark antique wax on the cane.

After removing the seat from the chair, I took off the cording and began removing the upholstery. However, the seat padding material started to separate. Since it was clean and still in good shape, I left the padding and upholstery in place and covered it all with a piece of drop cloth cut to size. It was easy to attach with staples.

Finally, I stenciled the seat with a French queen bee stencil I had in my stash. If you're interested in the stencil, I purchased it from Studio R12 Stencils on Etsy. (I don't receive anything if you make a purchase. Just passing along a resource.)

I used Apple Barrel paint in the color Pavement, and I used a make-up sponge from Dollar Tree to apply it.

This was a very easy project, and super budget friendly. I'm glad I did it.

Hugs,

  2. It's interesting that how at one time all the bright orange and brown mixes were so popular. I remember having curtains and couch covers in those bright colors. I wouldn't have them today though. I really like your queen bee theme that you still have going. The chair looks like it turned out very nice and I'm sure it'll get plenty of use when you're at your desk. Lynn and Precious

    1. Oh, my, yes, Lynn! I remember the oranges and browns, too. Not a period I particularly enjoyed as those just aren't my colors. :) xo

  4. I love it Nancy! You are so good with stencils! I can not for the life of me find any fabric dropcloth around my town! I did go look on Amazon and found some there. Where do you get yours? Everyone now has those stupid plastic things. Is the Apple Barrel paint just acrylic paint? Does it last well? I thought you would need some sort of fancy fabric paint! The chair sure looks pretty by your desk. I love the idea of using dropcloth for pillows, with the stencils. I'll have to see what I can do (one of these days). Take care... Marilyn

    1. I purchased this drop cloth from Wal-mart. I know people buy them from Amazon, also from Harbor Freight. Apple Barrel is acrylic paint found in the craft section of Wal-mart. I need to do some research and find out if I should to seal the stencil. I'm assuming it needs something to help it wear well. xo

    1. Thanks, Kim. The funny thing about this particular project is that I procrastinated recovering and stenciling the seat for weeks and weeks because I thought it would be a lot harder to achieve than it actually was. LOL In truth, it was one of the easiest redos I've ever done. Who knew?? xo
