Since I moved into my home two years ago, I've been slowly updating the ceiling light fixtures. So far I've completed light makeovers in my bedroom and the kitchen for under $10 each, and I've replaced the entry light with a new fixture. While browsing Pinterest recently I saw a DIY ceiling light makeover that utilized a basket, and I wanted to replicate that idea in my laundry.
I thrifted a pink basket for $1 that I thought would work.
I cut out the bottom to the size of the fixture base.
Then I painted the basket white and trimmed it in gingham checked ribbon I found at Dollar Tree. I painted the light base white and attached the basket shade to the base screws with twine.
Since I use LED light bulbs that don't generate heat, I'm not concerned that the basket could be a fire hazard.
This makeover is a big improvement over the old fixture.
And it adds to the whimsy in my laundry.
Nancy, that's a very cute idea that you had for the ceiling light using that little wicker basket. Very clever. It really matches some of the decorations you put on the hall wall. So now here you go again putting on your construction and clothes and deconstructing the bathroom. It will be a big Improvement when you're finished I am quite sure. The wallpaper is definitely a dated look at the very least. Good luck and don't get into too much trouble doing it. Lynn and Precious XX
ReplyDeleteLynn, I'll do my best to keep away from trouble, but I can't promise anything. :) I almost always dig into a room project like this and come across some unexpected "trouble". LOL
DeleteWhat a great idea Nancy, and that's a good hint using LED lights :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to put my crazy ideas into play, Polly. LOL
DeleteI'm considering buying a mobile home. There's a nice senior park where I live. I am nervous about it but it would be affordable, I could make friends with the other residents, and I would feel safe. You have inspired me although I wish I had your creativity and skills. I've enjoyed following your journey in your new home which is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteLynda, thank you for your kind words. I understand the hesitancy in buying a mobile home, especially one that's in a park. There's a lot of negativity expressed in our society about this because the owner doesn't own the property the mobile home sits on, and so there's no real estate attached. I purchased a mobile home in a senior park for the same reasons you cite: affordability and safety. My home fulfills those desires for me. It's not for everyone, but it is becoming more and more acceptable as we see the cost of housing -- even rents -- inflating. If you should decide to buy a mobile home, I would strongly suggest that you get a home inspection before you purchase. Make sure the home you're considering has a good, newer roof. My roof was brand new when I moved in two years ago, and that was worth about $8,000. Now it would be considerably more, I'm sure. If the home doesn't have a good roof and the owners won't replace it, or give you an allowance toward a new roof (and make sure you have a reliable quote for replacement), then move on. If the roof leaks you will end up with serious issues in your home that will degrade it if you don't take steps to fix them; and those repairs will be expensive,. I guess it's that way with any home you buy, but I think it's worse in a mobile home from what I've seen. I'm trying to maintain my home well, and so while I have made cosmetic improvements, the real money I've spent has been in things you don't see, such as a new water heater and a new furnace. They were costly to replace, however they have increased the value of my home and given me more peace about living here. I wish you well in your decision making. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I'll be praying for you. xo
DeleteThank you so much for taking the time to share this valuable information. I honestly wouldn't have thought about asking about the roof's age, condition, etc.
DeleteYou're very kind and I appreciate that so much.
It's my pleasure, Lynda. Please let me know if you need anything else. xo
DeleteWhat a cute idea for a light fixture. I like it and it is an improvement. Since buying our home in 2018 we have replaced all but 1 light fixture! Looking forward to seeing your bathroom. We still have our guest bathroom that needs an upgrade that is on the list but will probably have to wait until winter. Hope your new week goes well.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellen. I think light fixtures are one of the best updates we can make it our homes. They uplift the whole room. Also, they're a pretty inexpensive change, so you get a pretty big bang for your buck. ;)
DeleteYou are so creative! I really like that basket light!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mari. xo
DeleteYou are amazingly, crafty and your skills are non-stop. But where do you get your energy? God is good!
ReplyDeleteLOL. Your last statement answers your question perfectly, Christine. He is, indeed, GOOD!
DeleteI love your creativity in trying new ideas for your home. This new basket light makes me smile with how cute it is. All your decorating seems to give you so much joy and I'm getting joy from seeing it! I think God is getting joy from you using your gift of creativity, too.
ReplyDeleteAnna, I appreciate you so much. Your comments encourage me, and I'm so glad that my little decorating projects bring you joy. I do think you're right about God getting joy when we use the gifts He has given us. I certainly want Him to receive the glory for anything I accomplish. I couldn't do it without Him! xo
DeleteNancy.. what a cute idea for the light fixture cover! I never would have thought of using a basket! Just darling. I'm excited to see your painted wall in your bathroom. Painting over wallpaper is sometimes a challenge. One time, my ex and I did it without putting any "sizing" on it first.. within a few weeks, the wallpaper just fell off! The next time I painted over wallpaper, I did put the sizing on, and it worked! I'm sure you know all about it, since you are so so handy!!! I too have been thinking of buying a mobile home in a 55+ park... but worry about getting neighbors that are not so great.. there is always that risk I suppose anywhere, not just a mobile home park, but are in closer proximity to them in a park. I've lived in several single wides and loved them and the layouts! Have a good week! Marilyn
ReplyDeleteThe right park is really important, and I understand the close proximity issue. I'm fortunate to have descent neighbors all around me. In fact, I don't really think there are any problem people in my park. I do like the safety I feel here, and the affordability. xo
DeleteWhat a great idea for a light fixture. It's super charming, I love your creative brain. Of course, I can't wait to see what you do in the bathroom!! I know it will be fabulous!! xo
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kim. I'm excited about getting the guest bath refreshed. Hugs.
DeleteLove the ceiling light Nancy- Looks very pretty! You did a great job. Hope you're staying cool. We are sweltering here in MA. UGH!!
ReplyDeleteIt's been in the 90's for days. However, we have been getting rain, and that is really good. We've had drought conditions here in CO for years, so the moisture is welcome. And, of course, it cools things off for a least a little while. Thanks for your nice comment, Diane. Take care, and God bless you. xo
