Copper in the Entryway

Whenever I pass through thrift store aisles, I keep my eyes peeled for tarnished silver and copper. Some people wouldn't dream of using tarnished pieces in their decor, and, even worse, would be aghast at the tray I painted with chalk paint. One time a stranger commented while I added a tarnished silver tray to my thrift store cart, "That will be really pretty when it's all polished up." I just smiled. I didn't have the heart to tell her I didn't plan to polish it. The funny thing is, I've felt this way about aged metal for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, my mom had an old silver salt and pepper shaker set -- very ornate -- that my dad brought home from an estate sale. It was practically black with tarnish, and forever sat on a kitchen shelf unused. She never had the time or inclination to polish it, and I thought it was beautiful in its needy state.

On a recent thrift store trip I discovered a copper pot in the garden section for $6.99 that raised my heart rate. This is exactly the kind of aged copper I love.

And look at those wonderful handles.

I could tell from the copper pot's interior that it probably was used to hold a plant.

My first thought was to use the copper pot in my kitchen, but after I got home I found it was a bit too big for the space I had in mind.
However, it was the perfect size for my entryway. It just needed some flowers and a table or stand to hold it.

I thought lavender would be a great flower to use in the copper pot, and I found some at Wal-mart that I really like. To me it looks very natural.

The stand for the copper pot was an easy and cheap fix, too. I repurposed an outdoor plant stand that I've used the past two summers on my patio.

I gave it two coats of Rustoleum white linen spray chalk paint.

The copper pot with lavender now sits in the corner of the two entry archways, facing the front door.

Now I'm inspired to freshen up the rest of the entryway. You know how it is. . . one decor change leads to another. :)

Have a great weekend!

Hugs,

  3. That looks beautiful Nancy! The lavender does look real and it's perfect in the copper pot. Why do I never find wonderful things like this at the thrift store. I think I need to go more often.

    1. Betsy, I think frequent visits are key because donations come in every day. When I'm on a serious hunt for a particular item, I often stop by the thrift stores I frequent at least several times in a week.

  4. Very pretty, I like your light floors as well. Keep feathering your comfy little nest and sharing . . . I love real people's make-overs much more than TV DIY programs. Dear friend, you inspire me in so many ways, thank you.

    1. I agree, Connie. I'm not a big fan of TV DIY programs. Although, honestly, I'm not sure what programs like that are out there now. I haven't had cable TV for 14 years! LOL

  5. It fits there so perfectly in size and beauty, which came first, the pillar behind
the copper pot or the copper pot, lol. The copper appears to be antique with
the handles, but even it not, it looks too lovely to be a throw away. Lynn and Precious

    1. I don't think it's an antique, but it could be. Whatever its age, I'm glad I could rescue it. :)

  10. Love the copper pot. I love tarnished copper and silver. My sweetheart and I are traveling in Texas right now. Yesterday we spent time at Magnolia Silos in Waco. I was amazed to see tarnished silver featured in several displays in cabinets. Several tarnished pieces were just like what I recently sold to an antique dealer friend of mine. Oh, how I wish I had them back! Your plant stand is just like one I had and sold to the same dealer friend. Seeing what you've done with yours makes me regret that decision! I love the lavender in your gorgeous copper pot. Think I'd better head to WalMart for some lavender, too. I have room to squeeze it into my trailer until I get home, I'm sure.
