1940's Sunday House

Those of you who have followed my blog for awhile may remember my Living Large in Small Spaces series. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you can click on the
LLISSS tab above for the whole story.

A little over a year ago we sold our little cottage in Oregon, and since then we've been living in an apartment while I've dreamed of owning another joyful cottage.

Sometimes I'd sit in my chair with my laptop and search for hours on realtor.com to see what might be available, even before we were ready to make a purchase.

Anyway, last December on one of my virtual home tours I came across what I think is an adorable "Sunday House" in Texas. It sold right away -- I mean within 48 hours it was gone (which is pretty typical in this hot -- no pun intended -- Texas real estate market ) -- but I always had in mind that one day I would share it with you. Today's the day, so here we go.

This 806 sq ft cottage appeared on the market in December, and the landscaping reflects the season. Not much to look at in the winter.

Step inside, though, and you'll see what drew me to this sweet place.

Look at all the windows. Natural light everywhere.

I love the ceilings and the rustic beams. The hardwood floors are original to the home.

I wish there were more photos of the kitchen.

Personally, I would have done something different with the refrigerator and range, as I don't like them next to each other without a space in between, but that's me. Maybe that doesn't bother everyone. The kitchen floor is hand stenciled.
.

The master bedroom is pretty big for such a small home, and appears to have a nice closet.

I'm speculating, of course, but I think this cottage may have been a vacation rental before it was sold.

Whatever the case, I think the cottage is charming.

It has a little deck and shed in back.

A very rustic privacy fence, and fire pit for relaxiing.

If this place were mine I'd plant a bunch of trees and add plenty of flowers.

There's always room for improvement, right?

Hope you enjoyed the tour. Have a great week!

  3. Well isn't that interesting. I have never heard of the term Sunday House but I can totally see the sense of it. I knew from the rock walls that it must be in the Hill Country. You see that on houses and fences down there. The Hill Country is my favorite area in Texas, not that I've been to all areas. If I were a settler, that's where I would have ended up..

  5. Was that a shiplap wall in the bathroom? I think I watch too many of those Texas flip and sell shows on tv. Cute home. Loved the tour. Happy to see your blogging again.

  6. How WONDERFUL it is to see you on a regular basis, Nancy! I hope you stay with us for a while on blogging! First of all, thank you for coming to my blog post a while back; with my job and other activities, it's hard for me to manage my comments as I once did, but thank you so much. Now for this cottage.....is this not the cutest place! Stone and wooden beams, you can't go wrong. And I'm always impressed with how much efficient living space one can get from such a limited amount of area. Well done! Best wishes on your hunt for another small dream home. I know God will bless you once again!

  7. Oh, I love it as well and can certainly see why you were drawn to it! You could really do wonders to this lovely little home if you owned it! The stenciled floor in the kitchen intrigued me and I like the openness! It was a delightful tour and a wonderful way to start my week! Thank you!!

  9. I always loved your small house blogs. This one is absolutely wonderful! I, too, would rearrange the refrigerator and stove. Like you, I want some space between. Thank you for the information about Sunday Houses. I think I need a Sunday House at the beach!

  10. That is so interesting! It's a very charming house. I live in Pennsylvania Dutch country, and the article mentioned something similar here. The only thing I could think of was the Amish Dawdi Haus. Those are small houses (attached to the main farmhouse or not)for the retired father and mother. When the youngest son took over the farm, the parents go live in the Dawdi Haus.

  17. Lovely to see you hunting down small homes again Nancy and this one is special. Does look so tiny outside but the interior is surprising.
Still in my small cottage - but actually after being back in England the past couple of weeks, there are much smaller ones over there!
Happy week - we're off again soon to the land of even smaller homes - think green and wet!

  19. What a cute little cottage!! Why do I get the impression it may have been a 'flipper' house? Or perhaps you are right, a vacation rental. If it was lived in there'd be some landscaping, I would think!

    1. There's a lot of breathing room in this house. It's hard to tell if there's any other seating in the living room for more than one person. :)

  24. Nancy, I can see you living here and Denise enlarging the shed for a home studio, or maybe he doesn't need a home studio these days, what with the studio in town. Keep looking, your cottage will show up, but from what you said, you'll have to be Johnny On The Spot to get one. That one sure sold quickly. I really like the stone outside as well as the pretty interior and this one was the perfect size that you enjoy.
Thank you for your prayers. We need them and appreciate them.
    Connie :)

  25. I love this little house, Nancy, I missed your tours. I was surprised how spacious it felt inside and also admired the natural light. I think my favorite room was the twin-bedded one, I loved the homespun look with the handmade quilts and cushions.
