Living Large In Small Spaces - North Carolina Mountain Cottage

Twentieth post in the series
"Living Large in Small Spaces"

Greetings friends!

I'm so happy you're here for another edition of Living Large In Small Spaces.

Today we're traveling to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina for a look at a bright and cheery 3 bedroom, 1 and 1/2 bath cottage.

This is a two-level cottage with a total of 1224 square feet. Seeing the inside of this cottage is like opening a brand new crayon box. Color explodes everywhere.

Built in 2005, it looks like a quaint country cottage. The cooking stove alcove, little corner built-in shelves and the stone work above the alcove are all details that give it that bit of old world character.

The countertops are glazed lava, by the way.

This is an open floor plan: kitchen, dining and living all in one great room. The vaulted ceiling and loads of natural light make this room seem much larger than it is. There's a screened porch through the glass door next to the kitchen.

This room has several furniture pieces that afford storage and add charm: the two corner shelf units and the window seat on the far left.  The window seat is part of a freestanding bookcase and bench seat with storage below. Whether it was custom made or purchased, it's a wonderful piece, and a perfect way to add storage and seating in a small space without sacrificing style.  I love it!

The rustic stone we saw in the kitchen is repeated in this incredible fireplace.  It definitely makes a statement.

The upper deck has a great view of the mountains and valley.

Here's a clever way to have both a window and a mirror over the bathroom sink. The wings on either side of the window are double sided mirrors that close, providing mirrors above the sink when needed.

The bedrooms are on the lower level. Great trim  work in this room.
Okay, yes, I love the bench.

I think wherever you are in this cottage, the view is magnificent.

I received no compensation for featuring this cottage, and I'm not endorsing its purchase, nor the realtor, nor the real estate listing. It's simply a cottage I think is fun and unusual; the sort of small home I like to share with you.

  2. Wowee! what views!!! I do like an open plan in a small home, especially with vaulted ceilings. It makes the space seem twice as big as it is. Lovely choice of a feature. Happy Saturday Nancy! xoxox

    1. Red floors is a very bold choice in a small space, but I think the high ceilings help to pull it off.

  12. I was trying to decide which was my favorite about this cottage ... the views, or the large open space with the red floor. I can't decide. I love both! I thought the mirror/window idea in the bathroom was really ingenious too! I'd far rather look outside than at the mirror most mornings, lol!

And your blog header looks amazing! Can't wait to see more details on YOUR cottage :)

    1. You're right. It does look like a treehouse. Maybe that's why I like it so much. I loved playing in our treehouse when I was a kid. :)

  16. The view is stunning... I think I'd make a few transformations in the main room, but the view is so perfect, I'd be willing to work in that room without complaining!

  17. Good morning, Nancy! What a sweet tour and surprise to see your post. I was missing you!

This cottage really delivers the allusion of being much larger; the architects did a stunning sleight of hand to make it feel like a much larger home...and the open plan for some interesting reason still maintains a cozy feeling. I think the rock fireplaces and small window over the sink and preserving the larger windows for the view gives this space half cozy half open and modern look. What a GREAT HOME!

I sure enjoy your series. And how are you my friend? February is escaping us, and that is GOOD...I hope your project is coming along? I love your header! Good things to come in the next few weeks/months, and I'll be here to watch.

    Have a lovely Sunday! Anita

    1. I've always loved stone fireplaces. I'm not familiar with that particular type of stone; maybe it's local to the area. ??
