On June 28, 1894, President Glover Cleveland signed legislation establishing Labor Day as a federal holiday. What began as a national annual occasion to recognize the contribution of American workers, has largely become a three-day weekend marking the end of summer.
Although many of us will gather with friends and family for barbecues and picnics, some people will be working today. Whether we're working or not it's a good time to consider the spiritual rest we enjoy every day because of Christ's work on the cross. No longer are we slaves to sin. We are free from the labor of trying to be good enough to receive God's love and acceptance. There is nothing we can do to earn salvation. We simply repent of our sin and say, "Come Lord Jesus and make my heart Your home."
Trying to earn salvation is exhausting. We can never know if we're doing enough, performing just the right amount of good deeds. Jesus says, "Stop striving and believe in Me. Trust Me with your life and follow me. I've done the work required. It is finished!"
This is the rest our hearts desire. This is the rest that gives us peace, not just for today, but for eternity. So whatever you've got going on today, take a moment to praise the One who sacrificed everything so that you can enter His perfect rest.
