"Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." 1 Peter 2:10
The mercy of God should never be taken lightly. It is a great and marvelous truth that no one is beyond its reach. The vilest sinner by coming to Christ in sincere repentance can receive His forgiveness and become a member of God's family. The Bible informs us that God is "no respecter of persons" (Acts 10:34). He doesn't grant His mercy based on social status or education, or any other human measurement. The ground at the foot of the cross is level.
Knowing this mercy, this goodness of God toward us, should cause us to love Him deeply, and to continually seek to know Him better. We begin our journey at the cross, but it should never stop there. What do I mean by this? Am I saying that there is more we need to do to remain saved? No! What I'm saying is that if we truly have received Christ, then we should desire intimacy with Him. We shouldn't see our salvation as merely a ticket to Heaven, but rather understand with sobriety that it cost our precious Savior everything to secure it. He suffered unspeakable pain, suffering and humiliation to pay the debt we owe.
Recently I read these words of Charles Spurgeon, speaking here of Christ's love for sinners:
"Into His heart's love He receives sinners, takes them from the dunghill, and wears them as jewels in His crown; plucks them as brands from the burning, and preserves them as costly monuments of His mercy."
Jewels in His crown. Monuments of His mercy. What a beautiful description of rescued sinners. Let's draw closer to Jesus and give Him the honor and glory He deserves. Today and every day going forward.
