Monday Morning Encouragement -- Get Dressed

"Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh." Romans 13:14

None of us would dream of leaving the house without first putting on our clothes. Clothing is a necessary part of life. It protects us and prepares us for the day.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul instructs them to clothe themselves with Jesus. That may sound a strange thing to say, but it's a perfect expression of how the Christian is to prepare to face the day ahead.

I like Ray Steadman's commentary on Romans 13:14:

"When I got up this morning I put on my clothes. I put on my clothes with the intention that they would be part of me all this day, that they would go where I go and do what I do. They will cover me and make me presentable to others. That is the purpose of clothes. In the same way, the apostle is saying to us, 'Put on Jesus Christ when you get up in the morning. Make him a part of your life that day. Intend that he go with you everywhere you go, and that he act through you in everything you do. Call upon his resources. Live your life in Christ.'"

The world is full of obstacles that can trip us up and cause us to sin. That's why it's so important to prepare ourselves for what's ahead each day by first selecting Jesus to cover us in His Holy Spirit and empower us to live fully for Him and through Him.

People notice what we wear. Let's purpose to get dressed in Jesus every day!

Today's music video Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus (Amazing Grace) by Shane and Shane points us to Jesus. I hope it encourages you in your walk today.

I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.

  2. What a great explanation of that verse! And such a good thought - to put on Christ as we start our day.

    1. Mari, I've read that verse hundreds of times, yet when I read it this time it fully stopped me in my tracks. I pondered it and considered what Paul meant when he said clothe yourself in Christ. So studying for this devotional taught me something I had taken for granted for years. Thanks for joining me. xo

  5. I love this analogy. And let's add Ephesians 6 and put on the whole armor of God.

  6. That verse also makes me think of Adam and Eve and how God adequately clothed them after they inadequately tried to clothe themselves after disobeying God. So thankful for the covering of Christ's righteousness. Thank you, Nancy.
