How I Turned My Plain Jane Pendant Light Into a French Beauty

When I moved into my mobile home two years ago, one of the things I thought I might do is replace the existing pendant light in my kitchen's dining area. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted there, so I decided just to live with it for awhile.

However, the longer I lived with the light, the more I saw its potential. I began to see it all prettied up with a French Country/Shabby Chic look.

So, first I gave the light fixture a good cleaning. I didn't take the fixture down because the thought of trying to reinstall it by myself was daunting. And hiring someone to do it for me was out of the question. Remember, I recently paid someone to change out my ceiling fan and install the entry light. Not ready to pay for more services if I can help it. So, I stood on the dining table and got to work.

After cleaning the fixture, I dry brushed the wrought iron with Swan White chalk paint by Hello Hobby. This is a new brand carried by Walmart that I've never used before, and I have to say I like it.

The paint job really changed the look of the light, and though I could have stopped right there, I wanted to kick it up a notch and give the glass shade some love. Decoupaging the shade came to mind, but after watching several of my favorite DIY Youtubers work with IOD Transfers and the makeovers they were able to accomplish on glass, I decided to apply IOD Transfers from the Traditional Pots Collection.

Now, mind you, this was my first attempt at working with transfers and I was applying them to curved glass. To say I was nervous is an understatement. What if it was a failure?

Ah, yes. But what if it was NOT a failure.

So, I decided just to do it. Just to jump right in, throw caution to the wind, and do it.

I applied the first transfer.

And I was giddy! Giddy, I tell you.

The result was amazing.

I applied the second transfer.

The third transfer.

The fourth and final transfer.

My vision came to life.

Nothing about this project was difficult. From the painting to the final transfer, it was a smooth, easy process. The important thing with applying the transfers on a curvy surface like the shade is . . .go slow. Don't rush it, and trust the process.

Truly, the hardest part of this project was deciding which transfers to use.

Now my pendant light fits my French influenced old world kitchen, and I love it. I'm so glad I didn't replace it with a new light.

For the record, this is not a sponsored post. I just happen to like both the Hello Hobby paint I used and the IOD transfers.

Hugs,

  1. I admire your determination to just try it. And it turned out great. I love that it has the name Josephine. That was my mom's name!

    1. Anna, Josephine was my mother's middle name. Something I meant to mention in my post. She was a "determined" woman. I think she passed that down to me. LOL Have a great weekend! xx

    1. Betsy, I believe creativity breeds more creativity. I never really thought of myself as a creative person. More of a "copier". I could copy what others did, but to look at an object and reimagine it as something else wasn't something I did. The last few years that has changed, and I think a lot of it is due to all the Youtube DIY'ers I watch regularly. They've truly taught me how to look at objects in a new way. Thanks for your sweet comments. xx

  3. I had like the look of the light from the beginning but it did look like it needed something to give it life. And you found that something and you made it work quite well. It looks great, so glad you found a way to Spruce it up. Lynn and Precious

    1. Thanks, Kim. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on trying the transfers. I thought about it for a good long time before I ordered the transfers and dove in. It's always rewarding, as you know, when an idea becomes reality and we're satisfied with the result. xx

  9. Love what you've done to that fixture Nancy - and you made it look quite easy despite standing on your table, ooooh!!!!! The light over my kitchen table is very similar but is going to stay that way unless I change it with assistance from an electrician - always so expensive - because my tabletop climbing days are over now, haha!
