Kitchen Cabinet Painting - Reveal of the Finished Project

 Hi Cottage Friends,

My kitchen cabinet painting project is finished (except for a few little things that need attention), and I'm happy to show you the results.

I recycled a tension rod and two brackets, that the previous owner of my home left behind, to hold my sink skirt. The rod was white, so I painted the ends black, and attached the rod brackets to the cabinet frame. I've kept the doors and will paint them later, then keep them with the hardware in case some day I sell my home and the next owner wants to put the doors back on. I'm good at filling holes and painting, so I'm not concerned about the holes I drilled for the brackets. The door to the right of the skirt is where the trash can is, so I won't need to move the skirt to dispose of trash. I'll be storing supplies and other items I occasionally use behind the skirt.

I added knobs to the two tip-out trays from the same Etsy shop that supplied the knobs for the cabinet over the range. I wanted the sink cabinet to have a different look from the rest of the cabinets. The sweet bird sold me on these knobs.

When I first planned this project, I had in mind to makeover my sink cabinet to look more like a piece of furniture, and I found some Pinterest photos that inspired me.

Unfortunately, the design of my cabinets didn't allow for adding decorative pieces on the sides. I had considered removing the tip-out trays and installing a false drawer front to replace them, and then adding an applique before painting, but the cost to change out the tip-out trays to a false drawer front was about $125, and I just couldn't justify the expense. I mean, really, it's not that much money in the grand scheme of things, but I'm pretty frugal and thought that money could be better spent on other things in my home. The total cost to change the tray knobs and make the skirt was about $27, so I'm glad I made that decision.

Now that the cabinets are painted, I'll turn my attention to painting the trim and baseboards, and finishing the faux brick wall. I have a plan for my dining chairs, too. Not to mention lighting changes and other decorating ideas I want to make happen.

I hope you'll stick with me as I continue making this home my own. 😊

Hugs,

  1. It is all so beautiful. I love those knobs on the tip out trays. How I wish I could do something with my kitchen. I don't have nearly the amount of cabinets that you do. I showed Hubby the photos from pintrest that you suggested but he doesn't think any thing needs to be done. I would just like to get rid of that ugly wook "strip" on the European cabinets. It does seem like such a silly thing to be concerned over considering all that is happening around us. We do like to nest though don't we? I especially do it when I'm feeling stressed and wanting to just be in my nest. :-)
I'm looking forward to seeing all of the other changes you make in the weeks ahead. Have a wonderful weekend!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

    1. Hello Betsy,
A friend of mine had those same Euro cabinets and she was able to change them for very little cost. She went to a good paint store (not a big box type) and learned what type of paint to use to cover the finish. She was going to do it herself but ended up hiring it out since she a ton of cabinets. Then she added country style knobs and some fat trim around the ceiling and base. You would NEVER have guessed they were the Euro type before. You do have to use the right paint!!! If you are able to do it all yourself, it is not too much expense.Hope this helps....it can be done.

    2. Thank you, Betsy. I know it's hard to make changes in your home unless both partners are onboard. For a large part of my married life I lived in rental homes and apartments with ugly kitchen cabinets, and changing them was out of the question. During those years I made the best of it by decorating the space as prettily as I could. Just as you said, we women do love to nest. :) xx

  2. Nancy, what a beautiful area the kitchen has become - congratulations on all the hard work, it has truly paid off. I like the little built in work/desk space, and the birdie drawer knobs are so pretty.

Hope this finds you well and ready to have an enjoyable weekend. We are so fortunate to be surrounded by God's beauty as the spring flowers arrive, the birds sing, and the weather warms. My heart is heavy, actually broken, when I see what is happening in Europe, specifically in Ukraine. . . . a terrible time for those lovely people who have done nothing to deserve all that is happening.
Bless you dear, stay well and be happy.

    1. Thank you for your kind comments, Mary. As for Ukraine, I agree with your sentiments. It's so senseless and sad. I heard on the news tonight that 20,000 foreign volunteers have applied to fight with Ukraine. I pray God protects them and gives them success.

  5. Hello Nancy!
I think your kitchen came out great!!! The skirt the way you put it achieved the look you were going after. Very cottage feel. I actually think it might have been too busy if you did the "Pinterest" way. You did better and at a much better price point....win win!!!
You really have a LOT of cabinets!!! I am always switching things around to find more room!!!
Sure!! We will follow along!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

  6. What progress, and look just how many cabinet doors and frames you have actually painted. Oh my. But the outcome is just so inviting compared to the home's original
plain wood. I love birds as you know, so the drawer pulls are fun, and for you they
say Paris! I'll definitely be watching for your upcoming showcases of home decorating
and updates. What work, though. Lynn and Precious XX

  7. You've done a fine job! I like your sink cabinet better than the inspiration pictures, though I certainly understand their appeal. The fabric you used is very appealing - very attractive but not in your face. Congratulations!

    1. Thank you, Barbara. I'm happy with the sink cabinet. Ticking fabric is a favorite of mine, and I was thrilled to find the black and white ticking I used at Hobby Lobby on sale for %6.99/yd.

    1. Honestly, Susan, I would not have chosen a kitchen this large. Especially when it came to painting all those cabinets. LOL However, since I don't have a pantry, it's a good thing I have more cabinets than I need for dishes and such. My dry goods need to go somewhere. :) xx

  9. Nancy, you've done such a lovely job with the kitchen. You have great vision and DIY talent. That skirt is just darling and the knobs add so much to the look. I bet you must sit and smile at your view every time you peek that way! Enjoy it all and thanks for sharing it with us!! Hugs!

    1. Thanks, Kim. It's still kind of surreal to walk through my kitchen and see all the white. LOL. Painting those drab cabinets really brightened the kitchen, and I think that's been the most positive result of this project. So worth the effort! Hugs.

    1. Thank you, Barbara. It was a lot of work, but the impact it's made in my kitchen and my attitude about my home makes it worth the effort. Have a great week!

  11. Oh Nancy you must be so proud of yourself! The cabinets are just gorgeous and I love the ones you left a distressed black with the open areas to see inside. What a huge difference the white makes! Wow..... My kitchen looks like your "before" pictures! I so wish I could get up the motivation to start painting cabinet doors, but I just know I'd get one or two done, and then move on to other things and it would never get done. I'm not good at finishing things! Love how you put the skirt there by the sink. It is all just beautiful and I so enjoy watching you work your magic on your home! Hugs... Marilyn

    1. Oh, thanks so very much, Marilyn. It's taken me many months to get this done and there were times when I questioned my sanity in starting the project. LOL However, I have an open floor plan, so seeing my beautiful "new" kitchen from my living room makes me very happy, and all the work has been worth it. Hope you're having a good weekend. xx

  13. Nancy your kitchen redo is beautiful. I know you live in a very small house but you have made that kitchen seems spacious and quite grand. I'm sure it is a pleasure to fix meals there. The special little touches to detail like your lovely knobs give your kitchen so much charm. I believe that the ability to do these sweet and charming redo's on your own and on a tight budget is truly a gift. Not everyone is able to do this. We have much to be grateful for.
Have a lovely week my dear friend,
    Connie

    1. Connie, you are so right. We have a lot to be grateful for, and I'm especially grateful for the Lord's help in doing things I've never attempted before. As you know,, being a single woman has its challenges when it comes to DIY projects. You have certainly inspired me with what you have accomplished and are continuing to accomplish in your own home by doing it yourself. I haven't yet arrived at the level where you are, however I'm working on it! Hugs.
