Living Large In Small Spaces - Provencal Cottage

A French county cottage in the village of Cheval Blanc, France is this week's Living Large in Small Spaces feature.

Welcome to the 103rd post in the series
"Living Large in Small Spaces".

Named Le Mas du Bosca-Brun, the cottage's pretty pink stone exterior with blue and gray shutters is what first captured my attention.

Dating back to the 19th century, this semi-detached house, adjoining the owner’s home, has been restored as a holiday rental. The whole cottage is on the ground floor.

Inside the cottage is light and airy. The white ceiling and walls visually expand the space. I like the whitewashed beams.

I'm intrigued with the mismatched throws draped over the sofa, ottoman and chairs. Surprisingly, I find this look appealing. It gives me a sense of comfort and livability that fits the purpose of the cottage. Normally I would want to straighten everything up, but here I believe I would enjoy this very casual style.

The dine-in kitchen is quite spacious, and filled with delightful details like the stove hood, the decorative wall tile and the chandelier. Turquoise modern chairs -- a playful addition to the otherwise traditional furnishings -- provide a burst of color and are nicely paired with the turquoise runners.

Terracotta floor tiles reinforce the carefree tone of the cottage. And did you know terracotta tile is a hot trend now?

There is so much texture in this bedroom: the ceiling, the floors and rugs, the door, the bedding. I really like what they've done.

I think a lot of time would be spent outdoors here.

At first I thought the green patches were grass, but upon closer inspection I believe they're astro turf.

Well, why not? This is, after all, a cottage and grounds made for rest and relaxation.

I don't think I'd miss the lawn mower one bit.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I love the exterior's color scheme! And all the pretty throws on upholstered pieces would help guests feel they could relax and not worry so much about sitting down after being in the pool. And that pool area is lovely--I'm a little lukewarm about the astro turf!

  2. I really like the exterior. The shutters, wrought iron, and stucco are appealing to me. I especially love the pool's interior finish... I once had a pool where I chose a similar interior color. It's nice to have a little green grass, and regular grass probably doesn't do so well there. Here you see faux grass with natural shapes. Some are so good that I have to touch it to see if it is real. xoxo Su

  3. Loved the cottage exterior colors . . .
    Soft . . . inviting . . .
Enjoyed the turquoise color bursts . . .
and the mix of terra cotta, wood beams, mortar and whitewash . . .
The throws tossed here and there certainly gave a casual look . . .
although I found that less appealing.
    Thank you for #103 Nancy . . .

    1. If you like lots of color you would have enjoyed last week's house. It's like a box of crayons. :)

  6. I'm trying to find this soft gray/blue to paint my shutters and trim...just love it. This is an attractive home inside and out. I love the light filled rooms. The comforters and throws on the furniture are very welcoming and cozy, but I would prefer they didn't completely cover everything. As always, I look hard at the kitchen...this is perfect! I would want to whip up a nice stew with wine, or ratatouille!!

    Thanks, Nancy!

  8. Provence has a particular charm to me, maybe because I'm from Liguria, the atmosphear and lights of which are so, so similar !

This post of yours, darling Nancy, is truly cheerful and bright, the rooms of this beautiful house look so comfortable and welcoming !

Wishing you a most lovely Mother's Day,
    I'm sending blessings to you

    XOXO Dany

  9. Yes, yes, yes. Or rather, OUI!!!!!!!!!!!

The white-washed beams, the light and airy feel, and yes, those mismatched throws are what I love about French country décor sensibilities: the relaxed elegance is IN! And now that I see how they work, perhaps I have found an affordable solution to a challenge in my front room. I have a gorgeous Stickley couch in a velvet brocade in sage green. I want to protect the fabric, and also want a WHITE look. But finding the right throws I think will make this the couch I want.

As for this cottage, it's perfect. We just painted our front shutters a French blue!!! It's quite a bold change but today we are going to add some distressed paint features that will tone down the bright blue we ended up with. And have you had a chance to view "Escape to the Country?" What a swooner. WOW.

  11. Love the pool and those beams in the ceilings. I had to smile when I saw the covers on the couch. I have those same light blue and cream coverlets. Love those sweet spreads with the bird and flower pattern.
    This is a cutie.

  12. My favorite here is the terra cotta floor tiles. I have always thought of them as timeless but I pay no attention to "trends" and often gasp when someone says something is "dated" or other similar terms. You find the best small cottages for us to view Nancy!

    1. I'm glad you're enjoying the features. I once owned a home with terra cotta floor tiles. I liked them very much. Still do.

  13. It looks so pretty, it also looks like the weather can get warm there so the swimming pool right at the back yard looks convenient. I presume all the bedspreads placed over the sofas keeps the sofas clean, specially if the clients brings pets or children. It also makes it look so cozy, I like it very much. Thanks for sharing Nancy!

  15. I'm a little bit surprised with this cottage in the fact that the inside is so casual and the outside seems much more manicured and formal. I would expect a country garden with ducks, dogs and sheep running around. Maybe it is because the quilts on the sofas make me think, dog. I have quilts on my sofa, but only because Butchy likes to get up there and look out the window. I do suppose that the weather in France or at least southern France would make a person want to be in the garden more than inside the house. So I can see the garden getting more attention due to sunny warm weather.
I hope that you had a lovely Mother's Day.
    Connie :)

  16. I love Provençal shutters, they always have been appealing for me... As for living outside in Provence... People actually go out in the morning, then shut themselves inside, shutters closed to keep the sun out and then go out again at the end of the afternoon... Something I didn't really like when I was in the SOuth...

  17. A cottage with a pool in France? Oui, s'il vous plait!!

  18. It's lovely! My mom has that grass in her backyard and although it's convenient, it's kind of weird lol

  20. I love this place, so light and bright, and the pinkish color of the outside wall works beautifully with the blue shutters. I'm going to France in a couple of days so this is especially apt. Also the reason why I've not been here for a while, struggling to finish work and other things before I go.
A special thank you for all the lovely lovey comments you've left me both on the blog and on istagram. They've warmed my heart.

  21. Love the exterior, the floors and ceilings and the bedroom looks comfy. But those quilts draped everywhere, not a fan. Looks like they are drying out the bedding. LOL I am far from a neat freak and love casual style but not them. One other odd thing, in the kitchen my eyes went immediately to the soap sitting next to the washer on the floor. Isn't it odd. All in all I would love to spend time in this cottage. I would just have to fold up those quilts. LOL

  23. A delightful cottage indeed Nancy! The turquoise chairs were charming in the kitchen. I have to admit the throws on the couches were a nice touch, but I don't think I could live with it for long, but for a weekend - sure! :) And the Astro Turf, again... I could enjoy it for a weekend, but I don't think long term it would work for me. Natural is where I find my simple joys in life. Overall, a really nicely done cottage, and a great mix of old and new together. Hugs to you today :)
