Living Large In Small Spaces - Cissy's Cottage

Located in the Suffolk coastal town of Aldeburgh, Cissy's Cottage is this week's charming feature.

Welcome to the seventy-second post in the series
"Living Large in Small Spaces".

This delightful 17th century miller's cottage has been carefully and lovingly restored. Everything about it speaks to an earlier time, starting with an original hand water pump in the front courtyard which is still in working order.

Entering through the wisteria-shaded glazed stable door we encounter a petite kitchen where modern conveniences mingle happily with quaint painted cabinetry, exposed beams and a butler sink sitting atop white bricks.

I picture a little kitchen garden just outside the door from which I'd harvest ingredients for a simple meal cooked in this sweet kitchen.

Antiques like the grandfather's clock and the dining set make us feel like we're stepping back in time.

The perfect atmosphere to enjoy tea served from this beautiful transferware.

A working 1700's antique range warms the cozy sitting room and invites us to linger.

The panelled walls are extraordinary.  A TV is hidden inside the cupboarded bread oven that's built into the chimney of the room.

The flooring under the large antique rug is original Suffolk white bricks.

I'm quite in love with this stunning woodwork.

Everything about this lovely room says "unwind".

A view of the inviting courtyard

A Victorian roll top bath on ball and claw feet suggests a luxurious soak.

Upstairs two bedrooms are tucked under the eaves. The first is casually dressed in blue and white.

Antiques toys create a whimsical mood.

In typical old-world cottage style, we walk through the first bedroom into the romantic master bedroom. The breathtaking canopy is so perfect for the architecture.

This is the quintessential English cottage bedroom.

The grounds of Cissy's Cottage are every bit as welcoming as the interior.

Garden at the Front of Cissy's Cottage

A beautiful spot to chat with friends, or sit alone and dream.

Cissy's Cottage is situated on a private nature reserve.

A walk through the reserve takes you to the seaside.

I feel relaxed just looking at this photo of the beach.

Anything about Cissy's Cottage make you swoon?

  19. GOod morning Nancy, and a happy day it is as it is my 34th wedding anniversary. As I look upon this cottage, I have to admit that my life with my beloved has been one tucked away in a metaphorical cottage of friendship, coziness and friendship. A place as this is a symbol of the life we've led together. Every room of our union is one of relaxation, rest, a place we both want to go to.

This is a REAL cottage. I am often very impressed by modern architecture that tries to capture the intimacy and charm of these dwellings, but when you see a REAL cottage, there is nothing to compare with it. The fine details of the wood and stone work, the boldness and joy of living in a truly small space, and giving full attention to the necessities along with enhancing each corner with a special item is TRUE cottage living. No fear here of low ceilings; this cottage should be kept as it is and celebrates a simpler time.

    WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

    didn't you . . .
    That I would love Cissy's Cottage . . .
"You had me" at the Wisteria entrance . . .
    The clock
    Table
    Intimate
Stoneware vase of wild flowers . . .
    Sitting room
    Wall woods, trims, borders . . .

    I would love to spend "two months, or three, . . . there, . . . during our Michigan winters . . .

Again I notice, the English hang their pictures higher on the walls, than we do. Have you noticed that?

    1. I suspect the low ceilings in these old cottages may have something to do with that.

In every room there is something a little quirky, like the range in the sitting room or the toilet. I like it all.

  26. Living there would be pretty close to dying and going to heaven, wouldn't it? The wisteria entry is beautiful and I love the way they created a headboard using drapes and the architecture of the bedroom ceiling. I was awestruck by the size of that old tree in the photo just before the bench . . . I wonder how old it is . . . and what stories it could tell. I agree with Lin, above, it is more definitely a cottage to swoon over :)

  27. It's absolutely charming. I love each room, especially the under-the-eaves bedrooms.

  28. You just can't assemble that look from scratch today, can you? It takes years and years and such an eye. It's like a set for a delicious movie. You know how in pictures of most houses you can love it except for one or two things that you wish you could take out? Not in this house, this garden. Wonderful!

  33. Drooling!
So much to admire..I could comment on each photo, but the sink is what caught my attention. Can you believe when I was a younger twenty-something, we had one of those in our cottage, but all I wanted back then was something more modern so we gave it away!
    God bless!~ Lisa

  36. Good morning dearest Nancy! Thank you for coming to visit my post. It was the Lord that gave me the real meaning of an anniversary celebration; I was cleaning house on our anniversary which seemed to be just another ordinary day, then that is when it came to me. I would rather have many more ordinary days than just one celebration that isn't attached to anything, you know? God is GOOD!

  37. When can I move in?!
I adore this place. I love Aldeburgh too, been there many a time. You've just reminded me I must go back soon. And I'm going to look up Cissy's Cottage.

  40. Adorable Nancy! Sweet details inside and out... love the fabric arch over the bed, and cozy romantic feel throughout the home. The wood paneling is indeed quite unique, and lovely! I could just stay outside in the lovely nature preserve and little sitting area for quite a while! A real special feature this week Nancy! :)
