Joy List Monday - The Good, The Bad and The Thankful

I'm a little late in getting my joy list out today,
but I have good reason.

Early this morning our builder called to tell
us they were breaking
ground for our new cottage.
Yes!

The  Good
This is it folks.  T.i.n.y. Scott (the construction supervisor) is standing about where the kitchen sink will be.

So, of course, we dropped everything and
made the 1/2 hour drive to see the happy event.
By the time we arrived they were nearly done.
Let's face it, digging for a 667 square foot cottage
doesn't take very long.

We're very thankful construction has begun.

On the way back home we drove by a home in our
town to see this. . .

The Bad
Neighbor's garage - Tree uprooted by the wind

Thursday night we had a terrible storm,
with wind gusts clocked as high as 115 mph.
This enormous pine was uprooted and fell
on the garage.

There was other damage around the county:
trees uprooted, roofs that need repair, and
fences that were blown over;
but as far as we know, no one was hurt.

For this we're especially thankful.

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever. ~ Psalm 107:1

Are you looking closer at the beauty around you
or aware of things to be thankful for today?

Joy List Monday was prompted by Anne of My Giant Strawberry. I love her idea of "taking a few moments to jot down bits of beauty that I've noticed or any little details in my day that are bringing me joy."

  1. Hi Nancy - this is exciting to see the building begin. We were there only months ago so I can understand how you feel. We will be 'tiny dwellers' too so maybe you can give me some tips on how to decorate a small space. Ours is a 600sq ft. carriage house. Two car garage on the bottom and apt. above. The main house will be built later and it will be attached by a breezeway. It will be a small house, too. That wind must have been something to do that damage. Looking forward to your progress as you build. We'll be moving in to our new place soon. Onwards and upwards. Deb

  3. That's too bad about the garage & tree. Winds can be so scary. I've never experienced wind storms as bad as the ones we get here from time to time. They last sometimes days.

So happy for you that the house building has begun!!!! woop woop!!

  7. Nancy, how fun to watch construction on your cottage. So excited for you, I remember the thrill every time something new goes into your dream, enjoy your journey and thanx for documenting it. Also I am so glad that the tree only landed on the garage and that hopefully know one was hurt. Weather can be a demise or a blessing in our lives. ~Hugs Jo

  8. How exciting Nancy to actually see the first step in your cottage taking place!!! What JOY to see it begin!!!! And those wind storms are scary with pine trees in the yard! We have lots of pine trees here, and the occasional wind storms we get makes me nervous about having any too close to our home we want to build. I am so thankful that even though the storm caused some damage, no one was hurt!

  10. So exciting to be starting on this new adventure. We built our tiny home 4 years ago this April, the day after we broke ground it rained non stop for weeks. Thanks to Flick'r we can look back on those soggy days and smile. Take lots of picture, the time flies by.

    1. I'll take as many photos as I can, but we won't be onsite most days as the building site is 1/2 hour from where we live. I'm hoping our builder will remember to take the digital photos he promised me. :)

  11. Good morning NANCY! Oh, those fallen trees are all to familiar to us here too. In early spring we too get storms that are frightening, sending us all into our basements by the call of the sirens (we do live in a tornado-prone area). I am thankful no one was hurt! But the speed at the winds that took this tree down are record-breaking! And there is nothing more exciting in a new construction than seeing the first patch of dirt being dug up. I CAN'T WAIT! Happy day sweet friend, Anita

  12. Congrats on the ground breaking. I was surprised to see neighbors that close. Some how I got the impression that your home would be in the country. Don't know why. As for thankful and awareness; I was thankful for the warmer weather and blue skies this past weekend. And the bright full moon too. Lst night as I took Tebow out for his nightly business I noticed fog was rolling in and the city lights were reflecting a pinkish grey glow off them. So I stepped out on to the sidewalk and gazed down the road, savoring the peaceful feel. "Oh taste and see that the Lord is good." Blessings, Debbie

    1. Ooh, freezing rain is not something I like to see come this way. I think I'd rather have snow.

  14. How exciting for you! And they didn't have to dig through 2 feet of snow! The grass looks so good to me!

  15. I'm so excited for you! :)

I'm so glad no one was hurt. That kind of weather is no fun. Oddly enough, we're having springtime weather. It's supposed to be 50 out and it's been 70. Weird stuff...

  19. How exciting! Thank you for sharing. :-)

I agree with Kathleen above, I can do cold, snow, grey days, but oh do I dislike wind storms. We had an F1 tornado in 2001, thankfully our home did not receive any damage, but our community did. Our eyes are on the sky on stormy days.

  23. How exciting! Those big pine trees roots don't go very deep. We have had several blow over in our little town through the years.

    1. Judging by the looks of the root system in the toppled pines, I can see what you mean.

  25. So exciting to be moving ahead on your project (and I have to say that each time I stop by your blog and see the illustration of your sweet cottage at the top of the page it makes me so happy!!).

I'm glad that no one was hurt in the storm. That's very scary (and at least the tree fell on the garage and not the house!).
