"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving." Colossians 2:6-7
In his commentary on today's text, Alexander Maclaren tells the story of a "little child that said as to his father that 'he was a Christian, but he had not been working much at it lately.''' Maclaren goes on to say, "Do not laugh. It is a great deal too true of—I will not venture to say what percentage of—the professing Christians of this day." Maclaren spoke those words over 100 years ago, yet they could just as easily be spoken of "professing Christians" today.
The Apostle Paul recognized the importance of growing in our knowledge of Christ and submitting to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. He wrote extensively to the Church on the topic, as he knew there were false teachers who would lead believers astray, if they could. Colossians 2:8 says, "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ."
Jesus instructs us to take His yoke upon us and learn from Him (Matthew 11:29). We learn from Him when we study the Bible and obey what we read. His commandments are not a burden, they are a source of freedom. Freedom from the bondage of sin, and freedom from the work of trying to earn salvation. This is how we walk with Jesus. Daily moving forward with Him as our Guide. Trusting Him with our lives and looking forward to the day when we will see Him face to face. We establish our faith in Him, first putting down the roots of our faith in gospel soil, and then allowing Jesus to build us up. And all the while we "abound in thanksgiving."
Can you see the joy and freedom we have in Christ? We belong to Him and no one can separate us from Him. In Jesus we are rooted, built up and established. Thank you, Lord!
Today's music video Rooted by Kerrie Roberts is a beautiful praise song abounding in thanksgiving. Enjoy!
I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.
