Monday Morning Encouragement -- Eyes Fixed on Jesus

"looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:2

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, 3,275 people were killed in 2023 due to distracted driving, with cell phone use being one of the leading causes of distraction. The NHTA website gives this alarming fact: "Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed."

Just as there is a physical risk in taking our eyes off the road ahead of us when we're driving, there is a spiritual risk in taking our eyes off Jesus as we "run the race set before us." In Hebrews chapter 12 the writer reminds us that sin is eager to entangle us, and that we need endurance to overcome it and continue to run the race God has set before us. The endurance we need comes from Jesus, the Founder of our faith and the Perfecter of it. And so we must look to Him. I like the NIV translation: "fixing our eyes on Jesus." Merriam-Webster defines the term fix one's eyes on something or someone as to "keep looking at or staring."

Christians live in an increasingly hostile world, and every day there are those who have fallen prey to the distractions Satan uses to defeat them. Now more than ever we need to be diligent about keeping our eyes fixed firmly on the Lord. “Looking unto Jesus means life, light, guidance, encouragement, joy: never cease to look on Him who ever looks on you.” (Spurgeon)

Today's music video Eyes Fixed on You by Phil Wickham is a reminder of God's faithfulness to those who fix their eyes on Him!

I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.
