Monday Morning Encouragement -- Near to the Brokenhearted

"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

Psalm 34:18

So many times in my life today's scripture reading has been a source of comfort. I have found that when my spirit is most crushed, it is then that I feel God has moved away from me. However, as  Psalm 34:18 tells us, that is just not the case.

God doesn't leave those that have put their trust in Him; who have a relationship with Him. Not for a moment. Not ever! Jesus promised "never to forsake us", and He is faithful to keep that promise.

We cannot rely on our feelings for interpretation of the presence of God. Our human feelings can be very deceitful, so we must learn to disregard what we "feel" about God's nearness, and instead lean heavily into what the Bible tells us. In times of doubt, it is scripture that will guide us back to truth.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:39-39)

Here's one more verse out of many in the Bible that encourages us to trust that God has not moved away from us:

"I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken." (Psalm 16:8)

Do you have a scripture that has assured you of God's presence during crushing times?

Today's music video Come to Me by Dan Forrest from Beckenhorst Press is very gentle and quiet. It's really quite beautiful. I hope you will take some time to be still, quiet your heart and let Jesus assure you of His presence and His love for you today.

I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I'm praying for you.

  1. Good thoughts today! I like the verse "Be still and know that I am God". Often when things don't go well, I get caught up in thoughts of that, but when I am quiet, and dwell on God, I feel his presence.

  6. Your post reminded me of this hymn by Fanny Crosby, Safe in the Arms of Jesus. One of the verses...
    Jesus, my heart’s dear refuge,
    Jesus has died for me;
    Firm on the Rock of Ages,
    Ever my trust shall be.
    Here let me wait with patience,
    Wait till the night is over;
    Wait till I see the morning
    Break on the golden shore.

    Beautiful music...thank you.

  7. This was such a comfort to me this morning! I, too, feel God-forsaken and abandoned when those hard trials come. As you said, we cannot afford to go by our feelings, for they are so fickle and unreliable. We must go by the unchanging Word of God and know that He truly is near us as the tears fall and we feel so overwhelmed. Thank you so much for reminding me, sweet friend. You are such a blessing to me!

  8. Psalm 42:11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you disquieted within me?
    Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my help and my God.

    This verse has helped me so much not only in reminding me to hope in God, but also that I am not the only one who has experienced disquiet, fear, being cast down in spirit. Knowing this is normal (as you and all your commenters have attested to) and will get better, as I have experienced, helps tremendously.

  9. Amen.

    Just this:

    "I have good plans for you."

    He tells me that all the time.

    God bless you, Nancy.
