Wall Pocket Redo and Another Home Project

Lately my mind has been flooded with ideas for wall decor. I think it started with the budget-friendly wall decor with a vintage vibe that I blogged about several weeks ago. I had so much fun making that piece that it has inspired me to do more.

Last weekend I started another home painting project (which I'll tell you about later in this post), and while waiting for coats of paint to dry I worked on a quick wall pocket redo.

I've had this wall pocket for over a year. I picked it up at Hobby Lobby in their unfinished wood department. It was on sale, and I think I only paid a few dollars for it. I painted it white and used it like that for awhile. I always felt it was too plain, and needed some pizzazz, but inspiration never hit.  When the faux wood band that trimmed the pocket began pulling away, I knew it was time to put my creative thinking cap on and get to work.

The first thing I did was hot glue new trim to the pocket. In my stash I found a leftover drop cloth hem that I cut to fit. Then I did some distressing on the wall pocket and gave everything -- even the drop cloth trim -- a coat of watered down Waverly Dark Antique Wax.

This gave the wall pocket the textured and rustic look I had in mind.

After the great results I got applying IOD transfers to the pendant light in my dining area, I wanted to try a transfer on the pocket. The IOD transfer collection comes with a sheet of white transfers, and I thought one of them would contrast nicely on the dark wood. I chose the birds.

Oh my goodness! This met all my expectations.

I've staged it here with my favorite faux lavender. Although I will be hanging the wall pocket, it does work equally well as a shelf sitter.

Now, about the latest home project.

My mobile home's laundry is in the hallway that leads from the living room to my craft room, and the guest bedroom and bath.

The laundry is a little alcove between the craft room and guest bedroom.

Not at all attractive. The crown molding is missing from the right cabinet, and that rod between the cabinets is super ugly.

After removing the existing crown molding from the left cabinet and the super ugly rod, and filling the holes, I gave the cabinets and the doors (not seen in this photo) one coat of primer.

Even with one coat of primer there's an improvement.

I'm using the same chalk paint I used in my kitchen makeover. I have several cans leftover, so I don't have to buy any paint. I hope to have the painting finished this weekend.

My vision for the laundry and hallway is to bring in some whimsy. I'm not going to spoil it by telling you what it is. You'll just have to come back and see what I do.

It definitely will be fun.

Hugs,

  2. I'm definitely looking forward to the reveal on your laundry area. We looked at several manufactured homes before we left Spokane. We had originally intended to buy in a 55+ park and use it as our home base and spend most of the year traveling in our camper. However, Mom's failing health prompted our move back home and plans changed. I had really hoped for a sweet little home like yours. So much that could be done to make it cozy. Just as you have. The wall pocket idea was a brilliant one. You definitely have the decorating talent in your hands. I sure wish we lived closer so you could share your budget ideas with me.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  3. Since your laundry area is open to sight all the time, I am sure you have been disappointed with the look of the original cabinets and rod. But you have done so much already, I can see this is just the spot begging for help. It'll be fun to see your next decorating idea, as you seem to so easily see a change for the better. The wooden flower holder looks great with a white transfer. Not having used any, I guess they were only in black! Lynn and Precious xx

    1. The IOD collection I purchased has two pages of black transfers, one in white and one in dark blue. The blue is really pretty, and I've got some ideas on how to use those in the future. Transfers are very versatile. xx

  9. You did wonders with the wall pocket! I LOVE wall pockets for some reason. I have several, and have painted them to match what I want. One is pink of course! I like them especially at Christmas to put in greens and pine cones and little bright bobbles. Those transfers are great too! What does IOD mean? Never heard of that! xoxo Marilyn

    1. Thanks, Marilyn. IOD stands for Iron Orchid Designs. They provide decor tools like transfers, stamps, moulds and paint inlays. And they provide many tutorials, too. xo
