Buy a Chair, Get a Job

If you've been following this latest chapter in our Texas journey, you know that I'm in the process of furnishing our new-to-us apartment.

The first thing on my must-have list was  a dining table, which I blogged about here.

Next on the list was living room furniture. I had a vague idea of what I wanted. It needed to be comfortable, have a vintage look, fit my love of cottage style, and have a reasonable price tag. I looked at several local furniture stores, with no luck. Then I remembered I had seen a chair I liked at Pier 1 in Kerrville about six months ago. I thought I might find it, or something like it, at our local Pier 1.

Dennis and I went to Pier 1 and within a few minutes of walking in the door I found the chair I wanted. On sale, with an additional special markdown for that particular store. Well, okay, then!

I love the details on this chair. Overstuffed and tufted, with nailhead trim and turned legs. It's described as blue-striped on the seat and arms, however the blue is more of a seafoam green. The back and seamed side panels are a gray blue.

Never mind the blue painter's tape on the floor. That's where the matching ottoman will go. (More about that later.) Dennis and I have measured out and taped the furniture placement in the living room to make sure everything fits.

Now here's where things get really interesting. While the sales associate was taking care of everything, I chatted with the assistant manager. One thing led to another and I asked her if they ever hire. She said they actually were in the process of hiring, and she suggested I go online and fill-out an application. I did, they interviewed me and I got the job. So for the past month I've been working part-time, and that's kept me pretty busy and slow to post here at A Joyful Cottage.

One of the perks of working for Pier 1 is that I get a nice employee discount, which is really helping with the expense of furnishing our home. I ordered the matching ottoman and loveseat, and they should arrive this week. I also ordered a gray velvet wing chair for Dennis, which I think will be a nice addition to the pinstriped pieces.

I've been working on the bedroom, too, and hope to soon be far enough along to show it to you.

I'm really enjoying my new job. I mean, really, working in a home decor shop is a dream come true for me. Helping other people choose items for their home doesn't even feel like work.

"And my God will supply every need of yours
according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:19

Hugs,

Nancy

  8. Nancy what fun to read this morning. Beautiful chair and wow how God put you in the right place for the job. God is good and I am so happy for you. We have been soooo busy with moving in our new home. Painting and Reno’s galore. I have not been blogging with the closings and moves and work at the house but loved seeing your post this morning. 1. Hi Brenda. Yes, I left my library job when we relocated in June. We now live in a different city, much too far to commute to the library. :)

    1. Hi Deanna! I'm really happy with the chair and look forward to the other pieces that will soon arrive. Shopping for living room seating is not my favorite thing to do, so finding something so quickly at such a great price was a Godsend. Hugs.

  14. What a wonderful find! The chair AND the job! What a fun place to "work" if you can even call it that.. and glad it's only part -time. Don't need to fill up our lives with all work and no play! I love the chair.. it's is darling and so cottage-like and looking forward to seeing your other pieces as they come in. I haven't been to a Pier 1 for years, but always did love that store when I lived close to one. Have a fun week! Marilyn

    1. Hi Marilyn. I've shopped at Pier 1 all my adult life. The first store I went into was in Hollywood, California in 1970. That was a long time ago, but I still remember the feeling I got seeing the variety of things they carried. We're restocking the store right now for fall and every time I open a box I feel like it's Christmas. :)

  15. It all sounds perfect, Nancy and that chair is lovely. We stopped into Pier One recently and I sat in a chair that I told my husband I didn't want to get out of...so comfy! Too bad our cottage doesn't have room for anything else. And when we bought our first home, I worked at Pottery Barn for the discount. Great job, and I still have many of those pieces! Enjoy and I can't wait to see your other purchases. Fun! Hugs!!

  16. Oh, how neat! I can just picture you in a job like that, and I can only imagine how great you are with the customers. And to get the employee discount, too? It is a win-win all the way around! I know you are brightening your corner and shining your light for Jesus, sweet friend. God bless you!

  17. How exciting to work in a decor store. I love the chair, definitely cottage style. I need new living room furniture. Everything I have is over 20 years old. Still in good condition but the fabric is tired. I just can't believe how expensive furniture is now, especially a quality sofa. Looking forward to seeing your room come together. Hugs my friend.

  18. Hi Nancy,
That is fantastic. It really is something how things work out.
I started a new part time job as well. It is for Daybreak. I work two days a week. Daybreak is an adult day care for those with memory issues. It gives the regular caregiver a break. I am really enjoying my time with the participants.
I was doing Meals on Wheels, but I wanted more interaction with folks. Last summer we had Daybreak come for a garden tour. That is when the seed was planted. I enjoyed having them at our home so much. When the part time assistant position came up, I was so excited to apply and I got the job.

  21. LOVE the chair! What a dream job....I just love Pier 1. It must be so much fun to work there. I always find several things I want there when I go shopping. I just got the most comfortable cushions for wicker chairs I got at Pier 1 in the 80's! Gotta love that!

  23. Oh my goodness, lots of changes since I've been here last. I have to backtrack. :)

Pier 1 has to be a fun and yet very tempting place to work! I too considered that chair! It's so pretty. There's somebody (can't remember who) on Instagram that has 4 of them in one room...like a reading nook. Love it!
