Living Large In Small Spaces - Sandy Point Cottage

Nineteenth post in the series
"Living Large in Small Spaces"

4348 Point View Walk listing by Amy Raymond, Windmere Real Estate/South Whidbey

Hello Cottage Friends!

Thank you for joining me for another edition of Living Large In Small Spaces.

Today we're going to tour a beach cottage full of character, and I also have some personal news to share with you.

But first, our tour. . .

The cottage is located in Langley, Washington on Whidbey Island. What I admire about this vintage shake-shingle charmer (besides the fantastic Sandy Point location) is its condition and historic integrity. I think you'll appreciate it, too.

The 1220 square foot cottage, built in 1917, has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and a sleeping porch.

From the entry to the rear of the cottage -- and all points in between -- beadboard reigns.  On the walls, on the ceiling. . . and I believe it may all be original to the cottage, which to me is pretty exciting.

Built-in shelves run the length of the entry hall and reinforce the casual tone of the home.

Lots of windows mean an abundance of natural light and fantastic views of the Saratoga Passage.

A wood-burning stove in the fireplace ensures warm, cozy living room chats, or naps.

Furnishings are an eclectic mix of vintage, antique and a little bit of modern whimsy.

The scale of this dining set is perfect for this small room. Natural wood looks so warm and makes a nice contrast against the white walls .

I'm in love with this bed. (Why is it I always want the beds from the homes I show you?)

The kitchen has no doubt been updated over time.

The owners did a great job of maintaining the vintage look while adding modern conveniences.

Notice the little pail hanging on the antique hook? It appears to be holding a chalkboard eraser and extra chalk. Cute idea.

Like the kitchen, the bathroom is pure vintage cottage.

French doors lead to the back deck.

This cottage offers an abundance of outdoor living space.

There are a quite a few exterior doors, but in my opinion that just adds to the charm. And probably provides nice cross breezes in the summer.

A vine-covered trellis in the back of the house offers shade and privacy.

An outdoor shower is a good idea for cleaning off the sand from the beach.

A charming cottage on the water. Who could ask for more?

I received no compensation for featuring this cottage, and I'm not endorsing its purchase, nor the realtor, nor the real estate listing.

For more information about this cottage, see Amy Raymond's listing at Windermere Realty.

Now, friends, for my news (drum roll, please).

We'll soon be breaking ground on our new cottage!

Yes! The building permit was approved on Wednesday.

Here's a sneak peak of the cottage: an architectural rendering compliments of my husband, who is the architect and artist.

We kept to our goal of a small, affordable cottage; it's 667 square feet. Twenty-seven square feet larger than our previous home. Those of you who have been following our odyssey know the effort it's taken us to get here. We've learned a lot through the challenges, though, and I believe the final outcome will be well worth all the work and patience.

I'll be posting more about the cottage design and sharing our construction progress here at A Joyful Cottage. I hope you'll join me on the journey.

Blessings,

  8. I would love to live in a small cottage. It's something that i think about a lot. New jersey is a very
expensive state to live in. I think your cottage is going to be beautiful. What a wonderful thing to look

I could easily live in your featured home, so many great details and lots of lovely white wood, but I especially like the outside spaces and the views.

  10. I LoVed that little cottage! I could move right in and be very comfortable ! I don't understand why people have such huge homes and then need a cleaner to come in. I'd even have room for my sewing machine and bins if fabric too. And the view! Oh my Gosh...look at the view . My Grandkids would love coming for holidays...and Congratulations on the approval of your new cottage too. How exciting! I will be looking forward to seeing all the progress! Have a wonderful week .

  12. The little Sandy Point cottage reminds me of something out of a movie. Can't you just imagine it? We've been to Whidbey Island once and it was amazing!

I have no doubt that your cottage will turn out wonderful. You've spent so much time studying and your husband has the skills to make it just what you need and want. I can't wait to see it!

  13. Nancy,
Another fun tour! 1917 Wow and so much of the original details preserved, I applaud that. Love the beadboard and built in bookcases. The bed reminded me of one very similar that my Grandmother sleep in. Cottage filled with charm galore and oh sigh to all the outdoor space and that wonderful trellis.
Well Nancy it's the challenges in life that make the blessings sweeter. Love your husbands drawing of your soon to be precious cottage. Loving the roof line and the playful choice of red. Nice to be able to break ground to build your dream nest.
    Have a wonderful weekend,
    xoxo,
    Vera

Perfect get away cottage and in such a pretty location. I wonder if it is for rent? I will look at the link you provided as well. So super excited for you and the cottage journey you will be embarking on! Love the drawing,,, you will have to frame it and find a perfect spot for once the cottage is done! Cheers my friend!

It will be fun following along and I am so interested as we just had a carriage house built and will be adding on a small home in the near future. What a charming side entrance you will have. 25. Oh NANCY! What a rich and fabulous post today (but all your posts are a joy!)

This seaside cottage is like a great mansion to me. Any home, whether small or grand is perfect if it has the ocean as it's garden! Magnificent and totally pleasing. AND YOUR HOME! I can't believe that your previous home was smaller? 667 sq feet is still small, but you have shown me that one can live in a small home and have large stores of happiness. I am so happy for you and that your dream is coming true. You know I will be here to follow you all the way! Blessings my friend! Anita

  26. I would trade my huge Victorian home for a cottage like this in a second! We will no doubt be downsizing in the future and this is just what I envision. Just the sketch of your new cottage looks like what I envision too! So happy for you!

  27. Hi Nancy,

Another charming cottage, and this one on the water, wow! I love cedar shingles, it's so New England, to me, as is the white beadboard, (which I managed to get in my kitchen's open shelving; yay!). The shared open spaces, the pretty kitchen, and the outdoor decks make this cottage, for me, irresistible!

Now, on to bigger things - congrats on your building permit approval!! How excited you and your husband must be. Am I to assume that the red exterior in the sketch will stay red? Hope so! All the very best with your new beginnings, and looking forward to your posts on its progress!

    xx

  39. I'll begin with the last - congratulations on getting your permit. That is always such a relief.

I love Whidbey Island. My cousin lives in a tall, skinny place on the island with incredible views.

The cottage on Sandy Point is wonderful and just enough space to live and be able to keep up so that you can have lots of time outdoors enjoying island life.
